Content Management - Maybe it’s like Brussels sprouts?

Recently I was talking to a new potential client and they told me that content management is like eating their vegetables. They know it is good for them and their business but they don’t want to bother with it. This may sound like a tangent but recently I discovered that I love Brussels sprouts which as a kid I at least assumed I hated. Maybe, just maybe content management is like Brussels sprouts? I told this person about my epiphany with Brussels sprouts and he told me that to manage content for his website he was going to have to spend way too much and put way too much time into the project.

Now, I am not going to tell you that a well built content management system integrated with your companies other systems is not a large investment but it does not start at $50,000.00 like this person thought. A content management system is a tool for delivering information via the Internet in a meaningful way. Ideally content management systems get the right information to the right people formatted in the right way.

For example if you have lots of resources like the  Chicago Librarian or lots of articles and events like Teaming 4 Technology  than having a content management system is a great thing.

Teaming 4 Technology takes advantage of being able to connect their events with a registration system and their overall constituent management. Denver DataMan uses the same open source. Content Management System (or CMS) called Drupal. Drupal is so popular and robust that it was just used for the new White House site.

The best part about it is when a site is done right the end user does not know. When Denver DataMan builds a website we do it so that adding articles, arranging content, managing events, responding to comments and connecting to social media as well as many other tasks are easy. If you have basic computer skills than this will be something you can learn to do.

After explaining to the person in the story all the great benifits that a content management system could do for his company maybe he too will have a Brussels sprout experience.
