Application

A tool for extending the features of Facebook. There are applications that are just for fun and also those that add value to business users. Applications are provide by 3rd party providers.

Cause

An application that creates a type of page made by a nonprofit or their supporters that people connect to and have the ability to collect donations. Donations are processed through Facebook at a fee. Users that connect with a cause are supporters of that cause. Nonprofits should look at their specific needs when deciding if they want a cause or a page.

Chat

The instant messaging system in the lower right hand corner of Facebook. You can have have conversations with any of your friends using Facebook while you are online.

Events

The Facebook tool for users, groups and pages to post events. Events have posts like pictures, videos and comments added to them and people invited can RSVP.

Fan Box

Provided by Facebook to connect your Facebook Fan Page to your website. The Fan Box can show you and your website users recent updates to your Facebook Fan Page as well as who are fans of your page.

Fans

Fans are supporters of a Facebook Page. When you are the fan of a page you are listed on that page as a fan for the public to see. It is also shown on the info tab of your profile page.

Friend

A connection on Facebook. When someone connects with you on Facebook they become your friend.

Group

A tool to bring users together around a topic of interest. Groups can be funny or serious. Companies should consider Pages over groups because of the data collected.

Like

To show interest in a public profile on Facebook.
When you like a page you are connected to that page and can see its updates on your News Feed
To press the like button on a News Feed item subscribes you to further updates on that item.

Network

A sphere of influence in Facebook. There are networks for cities, countries, schools and large companies. Networks are one layer in determining if you can see information on a users profile without being their friend.

News Feed

The opening page you get when you log-in to Facebook that displays information about the actions that your friends have made recently on Facebook. When your press home you go to your news feed.

Open Graph

The name given to the ability of websites and vendors outside of Facebook to be able to connect to Facebook and leverage information from your social graph.

Page (public profile)

The location of information about businesses and other organizations on Facebook. Pages have general information about the company, events, reviews and discussion boards.

Page Favorites

If you are the administrator for a page and you like another page like Denver DataMan than you can add the other page as a favorite for your page.

Poke

A virtual poke. Used as a way to say hi/I’m thinking of you. Pokes should not be used for business.

Profile

The location of information about each individual user on Facebook. The profile has information such as location, network(s), birthday, use of Facebook, relationships job, education and any other information that the users want to share. If you look for someone on Facebook you are looking up their profile.

Publisher

The box that appears on Facebook giving you the ability to publish content on the site.

Social Graph

The term that is used to describe the connections between users on social networks.

Status Message

A short message posted by a user with what they are doing, thinking, eating, feeling, or want people to think about.

Wall

A feed of activities related to a specific friend and the opening page of a profile. You can also post notes, links, pictures, videos and other content to a users’ wall.
