Application
Applications offer extended functionality to LinkedIn including the ability to share files with Box.Net and book recommendations with the Amazon tool.
Event
LinkedIn allows you to add events to an events directory for free and share them with people who may be interested in them based on the information that users specify in their profile. This feature is new and still being developed.
Groups
A collection of users around a common cause. Many people add themselves to groups just for the sake of being in more groups. The strategy being that you can connect with more people. Groups are best used to communicate on issues with like minded individuals. Groups for university alumni, fraternities and sororities, business organizations, associations are great ways to share and communicate.
IDK
I Don’t Know – is used to inform LinkedIn that someone connected with you and you do not know who they are. IDK’s are punitive and should only be used if you believe someone is abusing the system.
Introduction
Because LinkedIn requires you to show an existing relationship before connecting the alternative is to request an introduction. If I know Mark and Mark knows Josh than I can ask Mark for an introduction to Josh.
Invitation
The tool used to request that someone be your connection on LinkedIn.
LinkedIn Answers
A tool to ask questions of LinkedIn users. This is NOT a place to promote your business. If you can get business by providing a good answer that is great but you will not make friends answering questions with advertisements.
Profile
The information that individual shares on LinkedIn. This includes employment and education history, strengths, accomplishments, recommendations and information about the users LinkedIn usage and preferences. When you look a person up on LinkedIn you are finding their profile.
Recommendation
LinkedIn provides the opportunity to recommend people who you know like and trust. You can request a recommendation to choose to give a recommendation without a request.
